syria war perspective report

August 23, 2017 DOD-“Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis met with Turkish Minister of Defense Nurettin Canikli and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan today in Ankara. This was the first meeting between Minister Canikli and Secretary Mattis. They discussed the need for ongoing open and honest dialogue, the importance of territorial integrity of Syria and Iraq, and concern over Iran's malign influence in the region. They further reaffirmed their shared resolve in the defeat of ISIS. President Erdoğan and Secretary Mattis later met and discussed regional security and strategy. Secretary Mattis expressed commitment to the bilateral relationship.”

In a White House News Briefing dated April 12,2017 - James S. Brady- “it became clear that Russia was not playing a constructive role in the wake of the Syrian regime's murderous attack, and, in fact, was engaged in a very sophisticated propaganda and disinformation campaign designed to allow the Assad regime to escape responsibility for these heinous acts. And, of course, what we did is responded, along with all of our friends and allies across the world, in a way that made it quite clear that Russia was extremely isolated on this issue and on the issue of Syria broadly, and the behavior of the Assad regime broadly. Of course, this is all happening in the context of our campaign against ISIS and al Qaeda-related groups such as al Nusra in Syria and in Iraq, but broadly across the globe. And those efforts continue apace during this time, especially operations alongside Iraqi forces, inside of Iraq, and operations along the Euphrates River Valley inside of Syria…the President giving very strong guidance to our national security team, including our great Secretary of State, Secretary Tillerson, who traveled to Russia in the wake of the murderous attack in Syria. And our response and now, of course, the international community's response has been a resounding combination of the Assad regime's behavior to engage in talks with Foreign Minister Lavrov and with Mr. Putin.””
