Law enforcement, security and broadcast professionals now have a high-quality hand-held device for viewing and sharing tactical HD video from airborne and terrestrial deployed transmitters, thanks to Cobham’s new NanoVue HD receiver.
“The NanoVue HD is already popular as an on-site tool to test deployed system set-ups,” said Cobham Tactical Communications and Surveillance’s Andrew Tilbury. “But now it also adds significant capability for users who need to quickly collect and review real time information and share it securely with other team members, or to support creation of an ‘instant’ and secure electronic perimeter.”
“Tactical teams on the ground who previously had to live with aircraft feeds downgraded to 3G carrier quality can now view the HD feed directly from the airborne platform with this new addition to the Cobham receiver family.”
Cobham already has more than 2000 standard definition NanoVues in service with police forces around the world. But in keeping with the continuing shift to High Definition video, Cobham has updated the unit with a host of new capabilities, including a sharp, high-quality day/night viewing screen, on-board evidential recording and new faster IP connectivity, so video feed can now be securely streamed onward to an operations room or other users. The IP function also gives access to remote users for more complex system set up, or calling forward stored recorded video.
Initially adopted by law enforcement agencies and broadcasters, the NanoVue has quickly become a popular tool for other users such as VIP protection teams, Fire and Rescue and UAV and UGV operators.
The NanoVue HD receiver maintains its predecessor’s key features, such as diversity antennas for improved mobile and NLOS performance, low latency and new additions to the touch screen control technology praised by existing customers. Cobham has retained the previous version’s form and factor so that existing accessories such as the hand-grip battery unit are interchangeable.
The new NanoVue follows the recently released Cobham miniature transmitter range, with the HD variant achieving great success at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games for body-worn action shots. The Solo 7 Standard Definition miniature transmitter is aimed at Law Enforcement and Cobham understands that many customers continue to use this technology. The new H.264 technology in Standard definition offers a 30% improvement in picture quality in this model, combined with very low power consumption levels not seen before from digital units. The NanoVue HD supports both variants and is compatible with Solo versions 4, 5, 6, 7, 7HD and 8.
The NanoVue’s technology complies with industry standards such as Digital Video Broadcasting — Terrestrial (DVBT) but also offers Cobham’s unique 400 carrier Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (COFDM) system, delivering greatly improved mobile performance and the ability to increase range by as much as 250 percent through modulation settings before resorting to an amplifier. This avoids the need for bulky and power hungry amplifiers in many deployment scenarios.
The NanoVue HD joins a family of Cobham products renowned for superior performance whether in a point to point link or as part of a larger “safe city” infrastructure.
