Read moreThe future battlefield will be the sea as it has always been since the time of the Roman Empire. Naval strength is used by country leaders to respond to territorial disputes, enforce maritime borders, and national borders. In Asia Pacific, the Peoples Republic of China has used its powerful navy to secure its borders beyond two hundred miles. Japan, South Korea, Philippines, and Vietnam have responded with pledges to grow their navies in the region. Ray Mabus, U.S. secretary of the U.S. Navy wrote on March 17, 2015 “The U.S. has the most powerful Navy in the world, but comparing the size of our fleet directly to other nations’ fleets—as pundits and politicians of late have done—is fundamentally flawed.
As America’s “Away Team,” the U.S. Navy protects and projects our leadership role because it can get anywhere faster, stay longer and carry everything it needs to execute its missions—all without needing anyone else’s permission…President Obama’s fiscal year 2016 budget calls for $161 billion to fund our assigned missions and continue to grow our fleet.”
The U.S. Navy is a “dwarf navy” with only 474 ships consisting of aircraft carriers, frigates, destroyers, corvettes, torpedo boats, patrol boats, amphibious support craft, and landing craft. According to the CIA World Fact Book, North Korea has 1061, the PRC 673, Iran 397, and Russia with 352 “ships.” Mabus further wrote “In my first five years as secretary, we put 70 ships under contract, and we plan to expand the fleet to more than 300 ships before the end of the decade…Partnerships are a force multiplier, maintaining our global presence, while encouraging others to bear their fair share of international security… I will continue to work together with the president and Congress to responsibly man, train, and equip a Navy and Marine Corps that remains the most powerful expeditionary fighting force in the world. America can afford no less.” An expeditionary fighting force means limited engagements and a reduction in losses. Can the Secretary believe that 474 “total ships” could ever have the capability to wage a war on the seas against 2483 ships? It is clear that it cannot.
Secretary Mabus wrote “Good business practices have allowed us to save money while providing more than 400,000 well-paying jobs directly or indirectly related to ship building and maritime industry.” Good business union job-creation ship building contracts does not translate into a reality that the U.S. Navy is the most powerful Navy in the world. By the sure numbers of ships of North Korea, the PRC, Iran, and Russia; they already appear to have the naval force multiplier.
