GPS III

This week, the US Air Force notified private industry that is seeking GPS III Launch Services, According to the SPACE & MISSILE SYSTEMS CENTER (AFSPC), “launch service includes launch vehicle production, mission integration and launch operations.

The United States is committed to maintaining the availability of at least 24 operational GPS satellites, 95% of the time. To ensure this commitment, the Air Force has been flying 31 operational GPS satellites for the past few years. In June 2011, the Air Force successfully completed a GPS constellation expansion known as the "Expandable 24" configuration. Three of the 24 slots were expanded, and six satellites were repositioned, so that three of the extra satellites became part of the constellation baseline. As a result, GPS now effectively operates as a 27-slot constellation with improved coverage in most parts of the world.

The first RFP marks a milestone in the U.S. Air Force's ongoing efforts to reintroduce competition into the Evolved U.S. Air Force plans to compete in its EELV Phase 1A strategy. ‘This is our first competition for EELV launch services in over a decade, said Lt. General Sam Greaves,U.S Air Force Program Executive Office for Space. ‘Our intent is to reintroduce competition while maintaining our focus on mission success in support of National Security Space launches."

The Air Force Space Command's Space and Missile Systems Center, located at the Los Angeles Air Force Base, California, is the U.S. Air Force's center of acquisition excellence for acquiring and developing military space systems. Its portfolio includes the Global Positioning System, military satellite communications (MILCOM), defense meteorological satellites, space launch and range

systems, satellite control networks, space based infrared systems and space situational awareness (ISR) capabilities.
